SIGN NOW: Tell Trump and his Secretary of Health and Human Services, RFK Jr., to stop silencing health experts and politicizing our healthcare >>
John, you need to read this letter if you care about keeping America healthy.
Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, who led the agency responsible for fighting respiratory diseases like COVID, resigned this week. He’s one of at least 4 top officials at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) who recently stepped down… and the letter he sent should be a wake-up call for us all:
“I am unable to serve in an environment that treats CDC as a tool to generate policies and materials that do not reflect scientific reality and are designed to hurt rather than to improve the public’s health.“ [1]
He continued:
“Having worked in local and national public health for years, I have never experienced such radical non-transparency, nor have I seen such unskilled manipulation of data to achieve a political end rather than the good of the American people.”
Trump and RFK Jr. are putting politics over science – forcing out experts and turning the Department of Health and Human Services into a front for their extreme and untested agenda.
Dr. Daskalakis is warning us – will we listen? If you agree that science, not politics, should drive our health policy, please add your name today >>
Common Cause doesn’t tell you what medicine to take or what food to eat – because we know we’re not experts when it comes to matters of life and death.
Honestly, we’d all be better off if the Trump Administration practiced that same restraint. Here’s what’s at stake when we put untrained ideologues and political extremists in charge of our nation’s health policy:
- This week, RFK Jr. announced new restrictions on the COVID vaccine he’s spent years pushing misinformation about – which means it’ll be harder for anyone under 65 to get their shots as new variants of the disease surge. [2]
- Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control has quietly scaled back its safeguards against foodborne illness – making the food we eat less safe and leaving us vulnerable to deadly outbreaks. [3]
- And unfortunately, all of these decisions have much higher stakes now that Trump and Republicans in Congress have cut billions from our healthcare – putting hundreds of hospitals at risk of closing [4] and kicking 15 million off their health insurance. [5]
Now, senior health officials are sounding the alarm – resigning in protest and warning that Trump and RFK’s political meddling is going to destroy our ability to trust the agencies responsible for protecting our health. [5]
This isn’t a radical idea: decisions about food safety, vaccines, and public health should be made by scientists and experts – not by politicians pushing conspiracy theories. Add your name to tell Trump & RFK Jr.: let our experts do their jobs and work for the people >>
Thanks for all you do,
