Celebrating American Workers
As Labor Day approaches, I visited the Ironworkers Hall in Perth Amboy to celebrate the accomplishments of unions and unionized workers in the United States. Unions built the middle class: securing the five-day workweek, paid overtime, safer working conditions, and the dignity that comes with a fair wage.
President Trump recently stripped collective bargaining rights for federal employees in his One Big, Ugly Bill. This is a massive step backward for American workers—it harkens back to a time when "collective bargaining" simply meant the boss yelling "take it or leave it."
American workers deserve better than this administration—they deserve a country where a good paying job, accessible health care, a safe home of one's own, quality schools for one's children, and a happy retirement are attainable. Ending collective bargaining is Trump's way of guaranteeing these goals are pushed out of reach for thousands.
