Governor Walz Orders Flags at Half-Staff to Honor Le Sueur Police Officer Karl Haugen

Governor Tim Walz has ordered all United States and Minnesota flags to fly at half-staff at all state buildings in the State of Minnesota on Sunday, August 31, 2025, in honor and remembrance of Le Sueur Police Department Officer Karl Haugen, who died on Monday, August 18, 2025.

*“Officer Karl Haugen dedicated more than 16 years to serving communities across Minnesota,”* said Governor Walz. *“His service, leadership, and commitment are deeply appreciated by his colleagues and the many communities he served. I extend my deepest condolences to his wife, Morgan, their children Griffin, Aurora, and Teddy, and to all who knew and loved him.”*

Throughout his career, Officer Haugen worked in several roles serving Minnesotans, including at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center, the Minnesota Correctional Facility–Faribault, the Henderson Police Department, and, most recently, the Le Sueur Police Department, where he served as an officer for the past 13 years. In addition to his service, Officer Haugen was a devoted husband and father who loved the outdoors, from hunting, fishing, and camping with family to riding his motorcycle and playing cornhole with his eldest son.

Individuals, businesses, and other organizations are also encouraged to join in lowering their flags. This proclamation is for the day of Officer Haugen’s interment, and is concurrent with the flags at half-staff directive in honor of the lives lost to gun violence at Annunciation Catholic School. Additional guidance on when flags will be raised will be provided at a later date.

Flags at Half-Staff

In keeping with appropriate flag etiquette and U.S. Code, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz may
order the state flag to be flown at half-staff under very limited circumstances. He may also order the national flag to be flown at half-staff on state property only. A state flag on state property is required by law to be flown at half-staff if the national flag is flown at half-staff.
