Dear Delawarean,
Home ownership has always been a key part of the American Dream. It has empowered generations of Americans to create a bright future for themselves and their families.
But now, that dream is out of reach for so many – and it’s getting worse. In 1981, the median first-time homebuyer was 29 years old. As of last year, the median age of a first-time buyer had risen to 38. First-time buyers now represent just 24% of all homebuyers, which is the lowest share in nearly a half century.
Let me be Blunt: We need a new way home.
Addressing the housing affordability crisis has been one of my top priorities as your Senator. In July, I joined a bipartisan coalition of my colleagues to unanimously advance the ROAD to Housing Act out of committee. This bipartisan legislative package would spur the development of housing across the nation and bring costs down. It now faces a vote by the full Senate.
As I continue my work to make housing affordable, I want to hear more from you:
Yours in service,
Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester
