We want to alert you, our readers, to an increasingly troubling pattern that we're seeing.

The number of visitors to the Common Dreams website from Google searches has fallen dramatically — and for a reader-funded news outlet like ours, that's a serious problem.

Whether we like it or not, Google has tremendous power over what people see and read online, with billions upon billions of Google searches run each day on the pressing topics we cover like few others do.

But today, when you run a Google search, instead of getting a list of relevant links or in-depth coverage, you're more likely to see a "Google AI Overview" summarizing what Google's army of AI bots finds on websites like ours — without sending people to the actual source.

Fewer visitors to our website means fewer people finding the work we do, absorbing the information we provide, and recognizing how journalism like ours differs so much from the corporate news that dominates the for-profit media landscape.

It's not just a hit on our ability to attract readers and win new supporters to our news model; it actually threatens the very existence of independent, non-profit journalism itself. If we can't be found, how can we survive? Well, that's where you come in.

We're just four days away from our make-or-break Summer Campaign deadline, and we need a significant uptick in donations to meet our goal. Will you donate to help support the people-powered journalism of Common Dreams and the lower-case common dreams we all share? ([link removed])
