Monday is Labor Day, the day each year that we recognize and celebrate the efforts of working men and women and of the American labor movement and its contributions to our lives.  The labor movement has fought for protections that benefit all Americans — from the creation of the weekend and reasonable work weeks, to the expansion of health care coverage, to protections for children, to workplace safety.  And it is leading today on many issues, advocating for members and nonmembers alike on issues that affect all American workers — fair pay, better health, secure futures, safe workplaces, constitutional rights, and democracy itself.

I have been proud to stand with the men and women of the labor movement throughout my time in Congress.  And I am grateful to stand with them now as we fight for fair maps and full voices for Texans and all Americans.  The right to organize and to advocate and to have a say in our government are central to our democracy.  And we are all stronger when the voices of working Americans are heard.  But these rights are under attack right now.  From the White House to state houses to the Supreme Court, the victories the labor movement has fought so hard to achieve are facing new battles and new adversaries.  

For generations, working Americans have not given up on the hope and the promise that American democracy and the American dream make possible.  And I won’t, either.  I remain committed to working to ensure that our rights are protected and our future is one of possibility and progress.  

On Monday, remember all those who have worked for this progress.  And I’ll join you in thinking of new ways that we can all carry on that work.
