Indivisibles,
History, free speech, and the truth itself are under threat. The Trump
regime is systematically working to eliminate access to information and
language it finds disagreeable, and now it has the Smithsonian in its
sights.
Seven Smithsonian museums are facing threats to have federal funding
terminated unless they whitewash their exhibits and follow Trump’s
directive to focus less on “how bad slavery was” and more about “the
future.” Yes, Trump has said history museums need to focus more on the
future.
Now, displays about slavery, civil rights, and the oppression of Black,
Brown, and Indigenous Americans will be censored or outright eliminated if
the Smithsonian board caves to Trump’s demands.
Indivisible’s BIPOC Caucus is calling on the Smithsonian’s leadership to
stand strong against this authoritarian overreach. [ [link removed] ]Sign our letter
urging Smithsonian museums to reject the administration’s demands and
defend America’s history from tyrannical censorship.
The Trump regime’s attacks on our past are ultimately grounded in the
politics of our present.
Trump has set out to dismantle the progress of the civil rights era by
rolling back programs that address inequality and fight discrimination --
even attacking the diversity programs of private institutions like
colleges and law firms.
That white nationalist project becomes far easier if the public lacks
historical context for why those programs were established and why they
remain so vital.
A full, truthful telling of American history is essential to our fight for
a free and just future. Trump’s attacks on the Smithsonian must be met
with swift, unified resistance.

READ THE LETTER
To the Smithsonian Board of Regents:
We are deeply concerned about recent threats to the civil rights and
Black history exhibits at the Smithsonian. These exhibits are
essential to telling the full story of our nation. America's story
is one that includes both injustices and the people who fought to
overcome them.
As taxpayers and supporters of the Smithsonian’s mission to preserve
and present truth, we urge the Board of Regents to reject any
attempts to censor, or diminish these critical parts of our shared
history.
The Smithsonian must stand firm in its commitment to historical
integrity, racial justice, and the truth.
We call on the Board to make a public statement affirming its
commitment to protecting these exhibits and the truthful telling of
American history. Now is the time to defend truth, not erase it.
