------------------------------------------------------------
1 in 6 babies has his or her life ended under Ireland’s abortion regime, leaving a profound void in our society.
It’s not a statistic to gloss over or to try and explain away, but a heartbreaking reality that calls for urgent action from our political leaders to prioritise reducing abortion rates. There has been a 280% increase in abortion since the law changed in 2019.
As schools reopen after summer, we must confront the hard truth: one child in every six who might have filled a junior infants classroom is missing.
Some might argue that this is a stark way to present the reality, but in truth it mirrors the voices of many women who reach out to us with their personal stories of abortion regret. Their experiences and feelings deserve to be part of the public debate, not erased for the comfort of those who set in motion the very system that’s causing such devastation and loss of life.
Major new study highlights potential adverse effects of abortion on women’s mental health
A new Canadian study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research provides statistically significant evidence that abortion can potentially have serious adverse consequences for women’s mental health. It reaches similar findings to other peer reviewed studies carried out in recent years - making the refusal of governments to inform women about these conclusions impossible to defend.
The latest research titled ‘Induced abortion and implications for long-term mental health: a cohort study of 1.2 million pregnancies’, includes the following findings: Mental health hospitalisation rates are higher after abortion than deliveries; risk is elevated for psychiatric disorders, substance use, and suicide attempts; patients with preexisting mental illness or younger than 25 years are most at risk; the risk of mental disorders is greatest within five years of abortion.
It was a very broad-based study that followed 28,721 women who had abortions and 1,228,807 who gave birth in hospitals in Quebec between 2006 and 2022.
The authors conclusion was cautious, yet still significant, saying: “While these findings are not evidence of a causal link between abortion and long-term mental health sequelae, they support the possibility that abortion may be a marker of an increased lifetime risk of mental disorders. Screening for mental disorders at the time of abortion may be an opportunity to identify women who could benefit from psychological and social support, particularly women with preexisting mental health disorders, under age 25 years, and with previous live births or abortions.”

PLC launches Pre-Budget Submission
The Pro Life Campaign Pre-Budget Submission 2026 has been delivered to the Department of Finance.
It makes several policy recommendations to the Government, including giving urgent consideration to putting in place long overdue supports for women in unplanned pregnancies that focus on keeping the baby rather than abortion, and instigating pro-family initiatives to help offset some of the challenges encountered by expanding families.
As well as investment in supports focussed on the continuation of pregnancy, the submission calls for resources to be set aside to promote contemporary models of adoption, for the proper resourcing of perinatal palliative care where the unborn baby may have a life-limiting condition, and the recommencement of support for counselling agencies that provide a life-affirming service to women, including easily accessible practical information on financial entitlements and baby essentials should the woman decide to continue with the pregnancy.
The submission states that in “a representative democracy, the State must recognise its responsibility when funding public policy to take into account the views of all citizens, including the considerable proportion of the electorate (over one-third) who voted No to abortion in 2018 and the large majority as evidenced in opinion polls who support the idea of women being informed about alternatives prior to an abortion taking place.”
