Let’s counteract an astroturf campaign by the tax prep industry and flood the IRS with real comments from real people.
John,
The Trump administration announced this month that they are ending Direct File―a free and easy way to file your federal and state income taxes online, without the need for expensive tax prep companies like TurboTax or H&R Block. But our fight for free government-sponsored tax prep services isn’t over.
Right now, the IRS is soliciting anonymous feedback on tax preparation and filing options through Labor Day weekend.
This survey was mandated by Congress, but the IRS is only giving us a few days to respond.
Let’s counteract an astroturf campaign by the tax prep industry and flood the IRS with real comments from real people.
For decades, corporate tax filing services like TurboTax and H& R Block spent millions of dollars lobbying Congress and the federal government to block the IRS from implementing an easy-to-use, free online tax return program—in the process wasting American taxpayers’ time and money.
Before Direct File, the average American taxpayer spent 13 hours and $290 to file their taxes.[1] Direct File streamlined that process, reducing costs and making tax filing less of a hassle.
Free, easy filing is particularly vital for low-income families who otherwise can miss out on important income support such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC).
