Dear John,

This month marks the start of the back-to-school season.

It’s hard to be celebratory at this time, especially knowing that states like Texas ([link removed]) and Florida ([link removed]) are taking away access to in-state tuition for undocumented students, and that there are more trying to do the same ([link removed]) .

We’ve weathered similar storms before, and I’m hopeful that we’ll get through this heaviness, too. I’m hopeful because of organizations like MALDEF challenging these attacks in the courts ([link removed]) , donors holding back funding from institutions ([link removed]) that abandon our communities, education leaders stepping up to protect students ([link removed]) , and the everyday people—practitioners, community-led and -centered groups, neighbors, you, and me—who will show up, work toward, and fight for our collective good.

And I hope that you feel the same. Any challenge that comes our way shouldn’t stop us from pursuing our dreams, no matter how slowly or carefully we must climb. Check out our scholarship list ([link removed]) and Career Activity Groups ([link removed]) (national), and AB 540 FAQ ([link removed]) and In-State Tuition Tool ([link removed]) (California) to support you in your journey. This is also an opportunity to fill out the CA Dream Act Application ([link removed]) * or learn more about financial support in your state ([link removed]) .

In community,
Madeleine
Interim Director of Higher Education
Immigrants Rising

P.S. If you’re an educator in California, this is the time to expand your toolkit in supporting undocumented students! Join our monthly Promising Practices Roundtables ([link removed]) , every third Thursday from 9:30-11 a.m. PT.

*The CA Dream Act Application ([link removed]) is due on September 2, 2025, for California community college students.
