Tens of thousands of hidden archeological sites could be buried deep within millions of square miles of dense Amazon rainforest. But the thick forest sprawled across nine countries is too vast and difficult for archeologists to physically survey, and many of those sites have gone undiscovered. Increasingly, they’re looking to newer technologies like A.I and machine learning for help. That’s why archeologists recently collaborated with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, on a public competition exploring large troves of satellite images and remote sensor data for signs of undiscovered archeological sites.
