John -- these are very serious times
in our country. We are still facing a pandemic that is
disproportionately killing Black Americans. We are having a vital
national dialogue on police brutality. And we are also having
extremely serious discussions on the Judiciary Committee regarding
allegations that the Trump administration has (yet again)
politicized the Justice Department.
And so it’s unacceptable for
a member of Congress to distract from this work with immature
behavior, which is exactly what Rep. Louie Gohmert did last week.
While Deputy Attorney General Donald Ayer was trying to deliver
his opening statement, Louie Gohmert began making a tapping noise
to try to drown Mr. Ayer out.
This is something a young child would do, like a kid who
is unhappy with the dinner on the table or put in time-out. This
is not behavior becoming of a member of Congress -- especially in
these serious times.
And so I spoke up, and said:
"Mr. Chairman, I would ask that the sergeant-at-arms be called
upon to stop the disruption of this meeting. I can’t hear this
witness. This is a very important witness."
Again, quite like a
misbehaving school child, Louie justified his behavior by saying
the witness was over his speaking time (the chairman had granted
him an extension): “He's way beyond his time. And if there are no
rules about when people can talk, there are no rules about when
you can make noise."
John
-- the American people cannot afford to watch us waste time
playing games. There is simply too much at stake. And that is why
as Rep. Gohmert continued making his tapping noise, I continued
to call for him to be removed by the sergeant-at-arms.
As a Congressman, it is my
job to expose corruption for the American people -- not allow it
to be drowned out and covered up by Republicans. And no matter
how hard they may try to “tap out” the sound of truth, it is
still ringing out.
In solidarity,
Hank
