Our most marginalized communities are under attack, Friend.
I’m listening and responding to the hurt on the ground, supporting people’s immediate needs here in Michigan’s 13th district, and responding to grassroots demands with groundbreaking legislation in just the past few weeks. (See more info below!)
We’ve got just over a month left before our primary, and 36 hours left to reach our fundraising goals before tomorrow’s midnight FEC fundraising deadline.
Please donate to my re-election campaign today to keep me in Congress fighting for you.
Here’s how I’m responding to the continued attacks on our most marginalized communities:
We passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in the House with bipartisan support.
-
Its reforms include support for independent investigations into police departments, and a new nationwide police misconduct registry to stop problematic officers who are fired from going to another police department and continuing to hurt our communities without accountability.
-
We need that here in Michigan’s 13th district, where Detroit police just drove into a crowd of protesters, and a Westland police officer violently beat and arrested a man with developmental disabilities.
I just announced a bill to ban government use of dangerous, racist facial recognition technology
, along with my colleagues Reps. Pramila Jayapal, Ayanna Pressley, and Yvette Clarke—and Senators Ed Markey and Jeff Merkley.
-
I’ve met with local community advocates about this for over a year, which is why I’ve introduced related bills and have questioned federal authorities about facial recognition technology, who all agree that my residents were right: It's flawed and does not recognize Black or brown faces.
-
Now a Black man is speaking out after a wrongful arrest due to Detroit police’s facial recognition errors, and local activists are escalating demands for a ban.
I introduced the landmark
Dismantle Mass Incarceration for Public Health Act, with my colleagues Reps. Ayanna Pressley and Barbara Lee.
-
It would require the release of eligible individuals who are currently in custody during the COVID-19 crisis and for one year after—including people in ICE detention, medically susceptible to COVID-19, awaiting trial (imprisoned just because they can’t afford bail), or who are primary caregivers.
-
This pandemic should not be a death sentence for people behind bars.
I just filed an amendment to provide $22.5 billion to fund full lead pipe replacement, and to prioritize low-income and polluted communities in infrastructure bills.
-
Fellow MI Reps. Dan Kildee and Elissa Slotkin are cosponsoring the amendment.
-
This will help folks in Flint who still don’t have clean water, residents of our 13th congressional district, and more.
We’re still serving our district’s most marginalized people through distributing medical PPEs and food during the pandemic and raising $100,000 for local groups.
-
We’re still operating our four neighborhood service centers, which support people every day, including wiping out $125,000 in college debt for a local disabled veteran.
-
The need is urgent—we must act locally in addition to introducing legislation, because not everyone can wait until a bill passes.
Because I demand Congress put people first, continually center marginalized communities, and make our voices heard in the face of injustice, people in power are threatened by me and our movement for change. The billionaire bullies and those who seek to maintain the unjust status quo are seeking to defeat me.
Let’s send them a strong message by winning my primary on August 4th and showing them that we’re here to stay!
Please donate now to keep me in Congress fighting for you.
Always serving you,
Rashida
