I'm Gracey Taylor, the new Supportive Schools coordinator at CSE, and I'm so excited to be reaching out today to share some great news: hundreds of care packages are in the mail and on their way to trans and queer youth across the South!
The last few years have been absolutely relentless for LGBTQ+ youth – from cruel legislation attacking their rights to a seemingly endless slew of negative headlines, queer youth are coming of age during a tough era and need every ounce of support we can give them. That's why, since 2021, we've sent out hundreds of care packages to queer youth across the South, in partnership with over a dozen fantastic local organizations who help us reach as many young folks as possible.
We're honored to be able to spread some love, joy, and tangible support to young folks through this relentless time. Each care package costs about $50, and supporters like you make this entire project possible. If you're able, chip in $5, $10, or whatever you can give to own a piece of these packages. Each care package is prepared with love by a wonderful team of volunteers in Asheville. While the contents have evolved over the last four years, every care package contains some core items for young folks – a bag, a notebook, a pen or pencil, and a message of support from allies like you telling queer youth to stay strong and keep their heads up in the face of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
This year, we're also excited to include a pair of cozy Bombas socks, a discount code for some delicious Mama Bear Sweet Treats cookies, and a copy of our book, Trans Kids, Our Kids. Plus, since LGBTQ+ youth are more likely than their non-LGBTQ+ peers to experience food insecurity, we included a $25 grocery check in the care packages that can be used at almost any grocery store in the US for any food item.
We're so grateful for supporters like you that help us move quickly, disburse resources, and get creative to show up for queer youth – both with practical help, and resilience support to help them keep their heads up during this moment.
