Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, Yanira has lived on the Westside of Albuquerque for more than 17 years, in an area she currently represents in the State House. Originally an Electronic Industrial engineer, Yanira earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instructional leadership from the College of Santa Fe and became an educator, teaching math for most of her classroom experience.
Now, Yanira is an advocate and expert of dual language education, which preserves culture and improves educational outcomes. In the legislature, her expertise is valuable in crafting policy on the House Education committee. She also sits on the House Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources Committee. She has served in the State House since 2023.

The Rising Star Gala will take place on Saturday, September 27th, 2025 at Sandia Resort and Casino . The VIP reception will begin at 1pm and the main event will begin at 2pm .
We will also be joined by special guests Tennessee State Representative Justin Jones and US Representative from Vermont Becca Balint! Justin Jones garnered national headlines when he was expelled from the Tennessee House of Representatives in 2023 for protesting the priority of protecting guns over the lives of children after the Covenant School Shooting. Since then, he was appointed to and then successfully ran for the seat he was once expelled from. U.S. Representative Balint is the first woman and openly LGBTQ+ person to represent Vermont in Congress.
This event is our key annual event that helps New Mexico Democrats have the resources we need to continue electing leaders who will stand up for blue-collar communities and defend democracy. Please support our Party at our signature event.
