[Image alt text: Ceres logo] < [link removed] > Dear John,
This week I joined business leaders, policy makers, and other stakeholders in Stockholm, Sweden to discuss waterβs central place in building climate resilience and to help identify strategies to mobilize greater private sector action.
Water is the thread that runs through every climate impact, from droughts and floods to heatwaves and wildfireβdevastating communities, damaging ecosystems needed for agriculture, and disrupting supply chains and business operations.
A recent S&P Global analysis warns that physical climate risks, driven largely by extreme heat and water stress, could cost the world's largest companies $1.2 trillion a year by 2050 if adaptation measures are not taken.
These mounting risks are driving more investors to engage with companies on water through the Valuing Water Finance Initiative < [link removed] > βthe only global investor-led initiative focusing on all dimensions of water challenges including curbing water use and pollution, protecting ecosystems, and safeguarding clean water for communities. An upcoming Ceres analysis will provide critical insights on how data centers are impacting water stress, helping investors and companies better understand and act on this growing risk in the high-tech sector. Investors are also exploring the full range of water risk issues in the industry, including those related to data centers and chip manufacturing, through a new Water and High-Working Group < [link removed] > .
Ceresβ 2025 Valuing Water Finance Initiative Benchmark report, to be released in October, will reveal how companies in water-intensive industries, including high-tech as well as food, beverage, and apparel, have advanced their water stewardship journeys since the first evaluation in 2023. It will spotlight leading practices companies are using to close gapsβincluding efforts on improving water quality and building resilient supply chainsβand where work is still needed.
Responsible water management is fundamental to adapting to intensifying weather extremes. Ceres and stakeholders at World Water Week have called on investors and companies to assess growing water risks and integrate water solutions in their climate strategies.
