Hi John,
They used to call us the "silent minority." Not anymore. A new article just made it official: We've gone from the margins to the mainstream.
Ryan Burge, an academic who has made a name for himself studying our community, just wrote a fantastic article on the political ascendance of the humanist and atheist community in America. The subtitle of his piece says it all: "From Margins to Mainstream: The Political Ascendancy of Secular Americans."
His research, based on analysis of the 2024 election results, confirms what we've been working toward for years: The non-religious are no longer a fringe group. We are a powerful, undeniable force in American politics. Burge writes:
“...it’s important to understand how vital these groups have become to the Democratic coalition. In other words—any Democrat running for national office needs to take atheists and agnostics seriously, given their growing share of all votes cast... In the most recent election, nearly a quarter of the Democratic coalition consisted of atheists and agnostics. That’s nearly double their share from 2008. In short, a Democratic presidential candidate cannot win without securing 80–85% of this bloc.”
We've gone from being a group nobody talked about to a group that politicians can no longer afford to ignore. That's a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our CFE community.
We're electing more non-religious officials, expanding the Congressional Freethought Caucus, and providing the crucial support lawmakers need to stand up for secular values.
This is proof that our efforts are working. But to keep this momentum going, we need your help.
Will you stand with us and make a donation today?[[link removed]] Every dollar counts in our fight to elect more secular champions and continue our march from the margins to the mainstream.
