Dear John,
What’s happening in Washington, DC right now should alarm every single one of us.
The administration’s takeover of DC’s police department and the deployment of military throughout the city is not just an attack on democracy — it’s a direct threat to community-driven solutions to gun violence. The White House’s strategy of overpolicing and ramping up arrests is silencing the very people who know what it takes to keep their neighborhoods safe.
And make no mistake: if they can invade DC this way, your city could be next.
Instead of investing in proven, community-led violence prevention programs, the administration is using DC as a testing ground for top-down control. Community-led, non-carceral solutions have reduced shootings and created safer neighborhoods, especially in the Black and Brown communities targeted by the White House’s aggressive, ineffective tactics
If unchecked, this could open the door to takeovers in cities across the country — rolling back decades of progress toward justice and safety. Progress rooted in investment in programs led by people of color who know their communities best. We know what real public safety looks like.
This is a dangerous precedent. We need to fight back, right now.
Donate today [[link removed]] to Community Justice to help us mobilize against this undemocratic power grab and protect community-led safety solutions everywhere.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. DC’s future — and the future of every city fighting for safety and the freedom to continue saving lives — is on the line.
Stand with us. Stop the takeover.
In solidarity,
José Alfaro, Executive Director
Community Justice
