I suspect that there are six specific things Trump is trying to learn in his trial-run military occupation of Washington, D.C.

1. How aggressively and obediently will the Defense Department and the National Guard follow orders when asked to confront American citizens?

2. How will the federal courts — especially the Supreme Court — respond to legal challenges? Will they stand in his way or once again expand his power?

3. Will the media, especially right-wing outlets like Fox News and Newsmax, go along with a Trump-led military coup d’état?

4. Will it be an effective distraction from the Jeffery Epstein scandal?

5. How will it play with the MAGA base? Trump’s voters are intensely loyal to him, but many are also deeply suspicious of the federal government.

6. How will it play with Republicans in Congress? Trump knows he has them cowed most of the time, but will they back him if and when he goes national with a full-scale military occupation?
