Migrant women are often already isolated in society.
They can face language barriers, racial discrimination and many are on low-income jobs. Unfortunately, this makes them particularly vulnerable to abusive partners and other family members. They are threatened with the possibility of detention, deportation and being separated from their children if they try to get away.
This leaves migrant women too fearful to report violence to the police, GPs, or other public service providers due to the real risk they will be detained or deported as a result. Most will also be turned away from life saving refuges because they can’t access public funds.
