August highlights from across the Foundation

Strengthening Independent Media

AI is transforming journalism worldwide, but much of the conversation has been dominated by perspectives from the Global North. Newsrooms in the Global South face unique challenges - and therefore hold unique perspectives - on the opportunities this technology presents.

In this exclusive interview, award-winning journalist and Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism [[link removed]] Fellow Sannuta Raghu, details how rigorous editorial standards and audience-centred design are transforming AI from a potential threat into a powerful ally for independent journalism in India.

As AI datacentres expand across the Global South, the growing demand for water and energy impacts vulnerable communities who are already facing worsening droughts.

Journalists play an essential role in delivering eyewitness reporting and shining a light on the reality of conflict. It is critically important that they are able to do so safely and freely.

We were devastated to learn that cameraman Hussam al-Masri, a contractor for Reuters, was killed in Israeli strikes on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in Gaza. Moaz Abu Taha, a freelance journalist whose work had been occasionally published by Reuters, was also killed, and photographer Hatem Khaled, a Reuters contractor, was wounded.

Hussam al-Masri

Moaz Abu Taha

We send our deep condolences and thoughts to Hussam’s and Moaz’s families and loved ones. Reuters has asked authorities in Gaza and Israel to help get urgent medical assistance for Hatem, and are seeking more information from Israeli authorities about these latest strikes.
