Have you heard of Catelin Drey? She is a working mom and community organizer in Iowa, and last night she flipped Iowa’s Senate District 1 – breaking the state’s Republican supermajority. 

Just last year, Republicans in Iowa enacted a 6-week abortion ban just like the one passed here in Florida — that’s why Catelin’s win is a huge deal. Not only will she be able to help Democratic legislators block bad policies, but she proves that winning is possible in so-called “red states” when we build strong, strategic campaign coalitions. 

This 9-point victory against a MAGA opponent, in a district previously held by Republicans, did not happen by chance. This win was made possible by running an inspiring candidate who had the grassroots support of her County’s Democratic Party and the investment of everyday people who believed in her campaign and message. 

Ruth’s List Florida exists to invest in and build support for women like Catelin who are running for office in our state. We believe that wins like Catelin’s are possible in Florida – leading to women breaking our state’s Republican supermajority and overturning their extreme and dangerous 6-week abortion ban.
