This morning at approximately 8:30am a 20 year old armed with a shotgun, a long-gun and a pistol shot and killed an 8 year old and a 10 year old, while they were praying in the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
17 other students were injured in this school for grades K-8th.
This was a planned attack on our children.
When did school become the most dangerous place we can send our children?
This type of school mass shooting is all too commonplace in America. Thoughts and prayers offered by the current administration is the epitome of complacency and inaction. The promise to protect our most vulnerable against all enemies foreign and domestic is a broken promise. Gun Violence is the number one killer of children in America.
This preventable tragedy and others like it can be avoided by enacting life-saving laws that address the root causes of gun violence. Shuttering a national Office of Gun Violence Prevention, eliminating federal funding for evidence-based solutions and promoting the gun lobby agenda of putting more guns in the hands of more people will only lead to the logical conclusion that we already know:
More guns=more gun death.
“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the entire community in this time of unimaginable sorrow,” said Maggiy Emery, Executive Director of Protect Minnesota. “Schools should be safe havens for learning and community, not places where lives are shattered by gunfire. We owe it to every child and every family to take meaningful steps toward preventing these tragedies. Preventing gun violence requires thoughtful, sustained action, before even more lives are senselessly lost.”
This is not even an isolated incident in MN this week. Only yesterday, a gunman opened fire with a high-velocity rifle at a group standing on a sidewalk in Minneapolis on Tuesday, killing one person and injuring six others.
Without any meaningful action in Congress to reduce gun violence, we know that State-based solutions and investing in our state advocacy groups are the most effective means to reduce gun violence. Today it happened in Minnesota. Tomorrow it will happen in your State.
A vigil will be held tonight, Wednesday, August 27th from 8pm - 9pm at Lynnhurst Park located at 1345 West Minnehaha Pkwy, Minneapolis MN, sponsored by SUPGV affiliate Protect Minnesota and Moms Demand Action, where you can find out more about how you can get involved in becoming part of the solution.
