Dear John,

This morning, our country once again experienced an all too common tragedy: A gunman opened fire at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis during their back-to-school mass. Two children—ages eight and 10—were killed and at least 17 others were injured, 14 of them children.

This was the first week back at school for these kids, ranging from pre-K to 8th grade. It was meant to be a week filled with joy and new friends. Instead, as children were packed into the pews, a gunman armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol fired at them through the windows. The shooter even attempted to block the doors to prevent anyone from escaping.

We cannot continue to offer “thoughts and prayers.” These children were praying when they were shot. We owe them more than empty promises—we owe it to all the victims and survivors to demand change, end this crisis, and build a future where no one else experiences this tragedy and pain.
