In the midst of a global pandemic and mass uprisings to defend Black life and defund police, behind the scenes, Conservative leaders continue to weaponize our country’s courts at all levels. From Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court to Donald Trump’s 200th judicial nominee confirmed just last week, Trump and his friends in the Senate have hijacked our judicial system, packing it full of judges who are loyal to Trump and his hateful agenda.
 
The Supreme Court is the highest court in the U.S., which means that it is the final arbiter of the law. Every June, the Supreme Court issues its final decisions for the term. These decisions have far reaching impacts on people throughout U.S. society, and set precedent for law throughout the country. For this reason, we partnered with Demand Justice last week to release a new report called [Justice in the Balance: What’s at Stake with this Supreme Court]([link removed]), which provides important background for understanding the Supreme Court and its power.
 
Supreme Court decision-making has bolstered and legitimized systems of oppression, especially white supremacy, and the recent rightwing court grab further perpetuates these dynamics. Our progressive wins cannot hang on whether Chief Justice Roberts wakes up on the right side of history. In just the past two weeks alone, Justice Kavanaugh has doubled down and shown us he stands against Dreamers, the LGBTQ+ community, and abortion rights. Now more than ever, the danger of another Trump justice is clear. The need for a grassroots uprising to protect our judicial system has never been more pressing.
