** Former King's College Dorms to Provide Working Men and Vets Housing and Services
------------------------------------------------------------
The former King’s College dorms are being converted into 64 units of transitional housing for working men and veterans experiencing homelessness supported with $2.4 million from the city’s Housing Trust Fund. Residents will have access to case managers, mental health support, and a substance-free environment – all designed to help them rebuild their lives.
“When people have safe and stable housing and a roof over their head, they can focus on employment, they can focus on recovery, health, and long-term success,” Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera, chair of the city’s budget committee, said.
Along with the Housing Trust Fund contribution, a donor purchased the dorms, and Roof Above (Charlotte's main men's shelter) raised additional funds for renovation including replacing mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems.
Warren Wooten, assistant director of affordable housing for the city of Charlotte, said. "Men who live there will be paying a rent to live there, but it’s not going to be as expensive as many of those other options out there in the community." Roof Above leaders said the community and the city have stepped up to create solutions to homelessness, providing temporary housing that helps residents transition into permanent options.
This new housing, planned to open later next month, will offer men shelter plus a pathway to a stable future.
