My name is Kimberly Monaghan, and I’m the board chair for Common Dreams. I first joined this incredible team 20 years ago, after serving for over a decade as a congressional staffer in Washington, D.C.

Since then, I’ve filled nearly every role there is at a nonprofit news outlet like ours. I’ve been the marketing director, editor, operations manager, photocopier repairwoman, in-house therapist, you name it — all while serving four terms in the Maine State Legislature.

In other words, I’ve seen a lot. But I’ve never seen anything like the brazen authoritarian assault on democracy unleashed by the Trump regime — at least not in this country.

Masked federal agents snatching people up off the street. Legal U.S. residents deported to foreign gulags with no due process. National guard troops attacking American citizens in major U.S. cities. And a spineless Congress and Supreme Court standing by while Trump shreds the U.S. Constitution.

Meanwhile, corporate news outlets have utterly surrendered their duty to defend democracy, curtailing critical coverage while cutting multi-million-dollar checks to Trump in a shameful attempt to appease him.

That’s why I’m personally so proud of the work that we’re doing right now at Common Dreams.

In this pivotal moment in history, with the world’s most powerful nation teetering between democracy and authoritarianism, our dedicated team of reporters is producing some of the best and most high-impact reporting in our history.
