Coronavirus cases are surging again in the United States.

In the past few days, we've seen record daily cases in three states: Texas, Florida, and Arizona, which are quickly becoming new hot spots for the virus.

These three states all have one thing in common: Republicans control both houses of the state legislature, as well as the governor's seat. This trifecta of power in state capitals means there is no check on the partisan blitz to reopen the economy at the cost of the public's health.

But that could change this November as I wrote last week in Newsweek ([link removed]):

"The alarming surge of COVID-19 in these three states is yet another illustration of the consequences of the unchecked GOP monopoly on power. There's an opportunity to break this stranglehold this November. Doing so not only can impact the health of millions of Americans, it also puts Democrats in position to put a check on gerrymandering and voter suppression that continue to undermine democracy. It's a win-win--but the clock is ticking."

The Sunbelt's rapidly growing and diversifying population provides us with a window of opportunity this November to retake key state legislative chambers in Texas, Florida, and Arizona. For the past few years, we've been making inroads to recapture these powerful points of leverage in our democracy before Republicans gerrymander our maps again.

Now, this November, we can not only stop the GOP's gerrymandering of the next decade by winning back these state house chambers, but we can also hold Republicans accountable for their shameful response to this pandemic. Democratic legislative majorities would also serve as a xxxxxx against aggressive voter suppression measures from Republicans in these emerging battleground states.

It's a win-win. A small handful of key state legislative races in the Sunbelt can have a profound impact on the future of our democracy. We're doing everything we can to win back power before it's too late.
