Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard in D.C. is deeply dangerous, John.
As someone who has served this country overseas and who is commander-in-chief of the Maryland National Guard, I take this very seriously.
Donald Trump’s policies have raised unemployment, made people lose their healthcare, and cut food benefits for children. Now he’s using citizen-soldiers as a distraction and as a cudgel to advance his own political purposes.
If he really wanted to address the issue of crime, he could look at what we’re doing in Maryland.
We’ve helped to lead the country in drops in violent crime, shootings, and carjackings. Our number one priority is making sure people feel safe in their communities — and our policies, from investing in law enforcement to investing in community violence prevention, reflect that priority.
Instead, Donald Trump and his administration are not treating our government resources and the people who choose to serve in our National Guard with the seriousness they deserve.
I’m embarrassed, I’m angered, and I’m heartbroken by these political games. Our servicemembers should not be used as a tool for advancing anyone’s agenda — and as Maryland’s Governor, I will not use our servicemembers for a political ploy.
