John --

Last weekend, Texas voted to gerrymander its voting districts in the middle of the decade to win a few extra seats for Republicans in Congress. This is a blatant power grab designed to usurp the system we have in place to squeeze unequal representation out of it.

In response, California has put a ballot measure forward to its voters this November to do the same thing in order to win a few seats back for Democrats - and getting praised by the DNC chair for "not playing by the rules" <[link removed]>. With both legacy parties fully ripping off the veil of pretending to care about the voters, it begs the question:

If no one is playing by the rules, why do the rules exist?

We're not being pedantic here. It's an honest question. This country is founded on a set of principles designed to create a fairer and more representative government free from the tyranny of ages past. But if the political parties can just decide to ignore those principles for personal gain then how are we any better than the monarchs and tyrants we left behind?
