Hey John,
Summer may be quietly fading away, but the work of developing community leaders is constant and necessary. Throughout the summer, Alliance San Diego has been training lots of new leaders through our Start With Dignity workshops — a three part curriculum that trains community members to elevate, claim, and protect dignity for all people. This campaign isn’t a side project, it is the soul of our organization.
Over the last two years, we have engaged more than 1,000 community members from ages 8-89 in deep-dive Start With Dignity workshops, exploring inherent dignity and human rights. We have facilitated more than 75 interactive trainings where participants walk away with a renewed sense of self-worth, the language of human rights, and tools to share their learning with others. With dignity as their anchor, many have discovered their capacity to be brave, to stand up for themselves, to advocate for change and protect not only their dignity, but also that of others.
One of our younger students shared that “ dignity feels like a warm blanket amongst a crazy storm .” The poetry prompt was to reflect on their journey using the five senses. Another student shared through journaling that “ dignity means to be creative, loved, confident, and to believe. ” Yet another shared, “ I have dignity from my first to last breath .”

Left to right: This August, we partnered with Stronger Together, a collective of therapists who promote mental health and wellness. We were invited to help the team heal as well as give them a new approach to interacting with clients. Students from Barrio College Institute sharing ideas around dignity. Both groups have completed the entire course.
Like always, the modules begin from a place of humanity. Full stop . From there we laugh, cry, share, and learn through tough questions and meaningful conversation. Dignity offers a new lens for building connection, understanding, and trust. It equips participants with confidence and grace to honor others practically and with ease. When we gather in community across our differences, we see what binds us as human beings is far greater than what divides us.
Today, we invite you to support our Start With Dignity workshops, help us reach more community members, and raise the collective consciousness of our region. With your gift, you are not just funding programs, you are fueling dignity and strengthening the foundation of the community. Please consider making a donation today to keep Start With Dignity thriving. Together we can create something beautiful: a world where dignity isn’t just a concept, it is a foundation to respect one another and honor our shared humanity.
