John,

Your support and engagement make all the difference. Thanks to supporters like you, 77,000 acres of older and mature forest will now be conserved, including forest well on its way to becoming old growth. This means cleaner air, cleaner water, habitat for wildlife, and new ways of valuing and managing our state forestlands.

Today, Dave Upthegrove, state Commissioner of Public Lands, announced that the Department of Natural Resources will set aside these 77,000 acres of state trust lands and explore carbon markets and other innovative approaches to managing them and creating value. This marks a significant first step in creating new ways to manage our public state forestlands. WCA applauds the commissioner for following through on his campaign promise to conserve these acres.

Many of you helped get out the vote and donated to Upthegrove’s close Primary Election race last year. Thank you! These acres would not have been saved without Upthegrove’s election. Your support and dedication made this possible. [[link removed]]

More remains to be done, both on this first big step Commissioner Upthegrove has announced, and more broadly across the 2 million acres of state trust lands.

Upthegrove’s decision follows a period of study that began in January to scientifically identify the older and structurally complex forest on state trust lands. While not all that older forest will be conserved by the commissioner’s order, WCA hopes that DNR will take the opportunity to explore new ecological management techniques on the forestlands that will not be conserved.

We’ll be monitoring and engaging on this process in the months ahead and will keep you updated on opportunities to support. Donate today to keep the work going! [[link removed]]

Thanks for all that you do,
