Governor DeWine Visits McConnelsville to Kick Off Three Major Renovation Projects

(McCONNELSVILLE, Ohio)—This afternoon, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine joined local community leaders in Morgan County to celebrate the beginning of construction on three projects to revitalize McConnelsville's downtown streetscape, enhance access to the riverfront, and renovate the historic Twin City Opera House.

Funded with support from a $10.3 million grant from Governor DeWine's Wonderful Waterfronts Initiative [ [link removed] ], McConnelsville will transform its village square with new lighting, sidewalks, and a new roundabout to replace a dangerous six-stop intersection. A new riverfront park will also be built along the Muskingum River with a performance area, gazebo, pavilion, walking trails, and access to the river for boats and kayaks.

A total of $3 million in funds from the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization [ [link removed] ] program will support renovations at the Twin City Opera House, which opened its doors in 1892. Upgrades to the building will include the addition of more accessible restrooms, an elevator, and space on the first floor for retail opportunities.

"I'm truly happy that the state is helping to reshape how people experience McConnelsville," said Governor DeWine. "These projects mark the start of a riverfront, downtown, and opera house designed for anyone who wants to enjoy the beauty and history of this fine city."

Governor DeWine announced [ [link removed] ] the Wonderful Waterfront Initiative in May 2024, awarding $204 million to 12 counties to expand access to local waterways, revitalize historic riverfront downtowns, and create new opportunities for tourism and recreation. The initiative is one of three programs launched as part of the larger Appalachian Community Grant Program, which has committed $500 million to strengthen Ohio’s 32-county Appalachian region.  The DeWine Administration spearheaded this unprecedented investment with support from the Ohio General Assembly in 2022.
