When Donald Trump threatened ABC News with an utterly frivolous defamation lawsuit, they stuffed $15 million in his pockets to make it go away.

Then, when Trump took control of the White House press corps and started replacing legitimate journalists with MAGA stooges, the corporate media meekly stood aside and let it happen.

And when Trump asked Congress to defund NPR and PBS, they immediately did as they were told, forcing local stations all over the country to cut back or shut down entirely.
This is what it looks like for an authoritarian dictator to silence and ultimately destroy the free press.

We’ve seen it happen time and again throughout history when fascist and authoritarian regimes take power. And we know what comes next. We are already seeing what comes next.

But while so many corporate news outlets roll over for Trump, Common Dreams remains a fiercely independent, progressive powerhouse.
