🚨 A Utah District Court just struck down a gerrymandered map, giving power back to the people 🚨 BREAKING: A Utah District Court JUST announced its decision in League of Women Voters of Utah v. Utah State Legislature — and it’s a major win for the fair maps movement. The court found that the Republican-controlled legislature violated the state constitution by undermining a voter-approved independent redistricting commission and enacting an egregious partisan gerrymander. Utahns made it clear from the beginning: They want to get politics out of the map-drawing process. But these power-hungry elected officials in the Republican-led legislature ignored the will of the people and enacted an egregious partisan gerrymander that carved up the most populous, diverse area of the state. Friends, this decision affirmed what we already knew to be true: we must hold leaders accountable when they violate the will of the people and try to cement power through partisan gerrymandering. It’s why the NDRC is working day and night to protect fair maps and prepare for upcoming redistricting battles — but we can’t do it alone. As Americans, we expect our elected officials to fairly earn their role of representing us by acting in the best interests of their constituents. Instead, Republicans have resorted to trying to seize unearned power by manipulating maps and silencing voters’ voices. This isn’t just happening in Utah. In Ohio, Republican lawmakers are preparing to redraw their congressional map under the exact same system that they previously exploited to gerrymander in their favor. In Texas, the GOP legislature passed a gerrymandered map this past weekend with the goal of adding as many as five Republican seats in Congress next year by targeting Black and Latino communities. In Missouri, Indiana, and Florida, we are seeing growing threats from Republican leaders to follow Texas’s lead with their own mid-decade redraws. While today was a win for our movement and the people of Utah, it is also a staunch reminder that our fight for fair maps across the country is FAR from over. — Team NDRC
