John, This weekend, towns and cities across England were suddenly covered in St. George’s crosses and Union flags. On the surface, it looks like patriotism, but our research shows this so-called “Operation Raise the Colours” is being organised by hardened far-right activists, Tommy Robinson allies, and Britain First. And they know exactly what they are doing. While there is nothing wrong with flying your national flag, for many, these flags don’t read as pride, they read as provocation. A reminder of the National Front in the 1970s, of racist mobs, and of intimidation. Already this weekend, racist graffiti and abuse has accompanied the wave of flags. And today, Nigel Farage has fanned the flames further, standing in front of a giant flag to announce Reform UK’s plans for mass deportations. John, this is where you come in. Where they weaponise flags to divide, we can raise a different symbol.
