Ismail — Over the last seven months we have watched Trump make ICE the centerpiece of his fascist attack on immigrants and our democracy.

So far, Trump has used ICE to

Arrest student protesters for exercising free speech and hold them in indefinite detention.

Suspend due process and deport both documented and undocumented immigrants on suspicion alone.

Terrorize immigrant communities with violent raids, racial profiling, and gestapo-tactics.

Deport legal US residents to a notorious super-prison in El Salvador with no trial and no pathway to return home.

Construct concentration camps to hold immigrant families in disgusting and inhumane conditions without contact with the outside world.

Take over the streets of DC and violate civil rights to respond to a fake “crime emergency.”
In a functioning democracy, these would be criminal acts. Under Trump, they are part of an authoritarian plan to turn our country into a constant police state.

Ismail, ICE was created 2003 — it’s not a long-standing institution in our democracy, and it’s not a necessary one either. We can have a functional and humane immigration system without the need for violent crackdowns.

It’s a blessing there was no ICE when millions of people immigrated here to escape war, famine, and persecution throughout our history — people who went on to build this country from the ground up and do great things for their communities and the world.

We can and should do away with this thuggish police force that serves no purpose but to carry out Trump’s fascist policies.
