Join the Mass Call for Make Billionaires Pay!

Tuesday, August 26th at 7pm

This summer’s record heat, smoke-choked skies, and soaring grocery bills all point to the same culprit: a billionaire class willing to torch our democracy and our planet for profit. While Trump’s Big Ugly bill strips resources from working families, his Big Oil allies rake in windfalls, dumping toxic pollution on Black, Brown, and working-class communities already hit hardest by floods and fire. Join the Mass Call tonight, as we build solidarity for the Make Billionaires Pay march in NYC on September 20th. Want to help with planning for the march? Email [email protected]!

Call relay to stop the Williams NESE Pipeline!

Wednesday, August 27th at 7pm

A thousand thanks to all of you who submitted comments to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation urging it to deny Williams required state permits. However, Governor Hochul may override a DEC decision. She says she will evaluate any energy project based on its impact on reliability, affordability, and adherence to the law. The Williams pipeline fails on all three counts but there are forces working to persuade her differently. Sign up for a call relay tomorrow, August 27 to hold her accountable! There will be more actions coming up so watch the Stop the Williams NESE Pipeline website for updates or contact [email protected].

Save the date for Sun Day and an art build!

Sunday, August 31st

September 21st is Sun Day, a national day to celebrate and take action for clean energy. 350Brooklyn’s Sun Day celebration will feature music, art-making, solar demonstrations, games for kids, and a panel with UPROSE, Solar One, and Brooklyn Solar Works. We’ll be creating decorations for the event this Sunday, August 31st, at a studio in Gowanus. To join the art build, volunteer to help publicize Sun Day, or help out on September 21st, [email protected].

Flooding in NYC. Are you prepared?

Fall in NYC brings many joys: cooler weather, leaves turning, new apples in the farmers markets. But it also can bring heavy rains. 350Brooklyn's "Facing the Future: Building Resilience to Climate in NYC" program has resources to help you deal with downpours. We've got ideas for solutions on the personal level, for your neighborhood, and for the government. Check it out on our website!

Tell NYPA: Build more renewable energy!

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is the biggest publicly-owned utility in the US. The 2023 Build Public Renewables Act directs NYPA to put up renewable electrical facilities to meet the state's climate goals. Under intense pressure, NYPA says it will add 7 gigawatts of renewable power over the next TK years -- but we need 15 gigawatts to meet our goals and make energy more affordable. Send a comment to NYPA by September 10th through Public Power’s website.

Want to help? To volunteer, email us at [email protected].

FROM OUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS

Here Comes the Sun by Bill McKibben

New York Society for Ethical Culture ● Tuesday, September 9th at 7pm

Bill McKibben's new book "tells the story of the sudden spike in power from the sun and wind—and the desperate fight of the fossil fuel industry and their politicians to hold this new power at bay." Hear from the author and activist himself at the New York Society for Ethical Culture’s event. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10.

Protect our communities from air pollution

The Trump/Zeldin EPA is attempting to repeal the 2009 “Endangerment Finding," the legal cornerstone that allows the federal government to regulate climate pollution. Without it, safeguards on emissions from cars, power plants, and industry will be dismantled. It’s one of the administration’s most radical, and legally risky, climate moves to date. We can make sure this does not happen quietly, and a flood of comments will be helpful for lawsuits challenging this dangerous proposal. Submit your comment to the EPA, and urge your elected officials to do the same.

Get involved in one of our workgroups!

350Brooklyn is volunteer-powered. At the heart of these efforts are our campaigns and committees. Follow the links below for more information on how to join.

Climate Check Stories and Solutions is 350Brooklyn’s podcast. Each monthly episode breaks down the climate crisis through conversations with local climate activists and community organizers. We discuss individual climate stories and pinpoint policies and local actions that can lead us to a healthier climate and a more just society—from fighting pipelines to working with nature and everything in between. Email us at [email protected].

350BK Families is part of the Climate Families NYC coalition, which aims to make climate activism accessible to parents and families. Our activities bring children, youth, and their adults together to fight for a livable future in age appropriate ways. Email us at [email protected].

Facing the Future: Building Resilience to Climate in NYC is a series of talks, workshops, tours, and conversations about building resilience in NYC in the face of the climate crisis. Volunteers working on this series could play many roles: developing individual programs, finding speakers, securing venues, researching supporting material for web pages, leading sessions or breakout groups, promoting it on social media and traditional media. Email us at [email protected].

Legislation focuses on passing significant climate legislation in Albany and in Washington. We develop relationships with local officials, research key issues, and participate in tactics like rallies and phone relays. Email [email protected].

The Media Committee is 350Brooklyn's all-around in-house media team. We write copy, design graphics, run 350BK's social media channels and website, edit our biweekly community newsletter, and oversee creative initiatives like the new 350Brooklyn e-magazine Parts Per Million. Get in touch at [email protected].

Plastic Free works to eliminate plastic pollution and reduce reliance on single-use plastic products. We meet monthly via Zoom, and work on a variety of projects including legislative lobbying efforts, campaigns promoting going plastic free, and neighborhood efforts to reduce waste. Email us at [email protected].

Power Hour is a weekly session of phone-calling power. Each week we convene on Zoom to call, email, and tweet at our elected leaders about a different climate or environmental justice issue prioritized by 350BK and our allies. Power Hour is designed to be high impact, but low pressure and low commitment. Join us every week as a way to routinize your climate activism, or come only on weeks when you’re free. Email us at [email protected].
