New Report: Doorways' Volunteer Engagement

Doorways relies on more than 100 volunteers to keep our services available to survivors of domestic and sexual violence 24/7, covering key shifts on weekends, overnights, and holidays.

This year, volunteers served 11,396 hours across all programs. Based on the Current Estimated Value of Each Volunteer Hour (Independent Sector), Doorways' team of 100+ volunteers provided over $396k of meaningful service in FY25.

Highlights

Volunteers provided 45 accompaniments and 93% of all Hospital Accompaniment Response Program (HARP) coverage this year.
Safehouse Coverage/Hotline Volunteers served more than 1,700 hours in FY25, expanding our capacity for double volunteer coverage on weekends.
Children's Program Volunteers provided fun activities during 74 playtime sessions at the Safehouse.
Volunteers spent 48 hours on outreach and 607 hours on group service projects.

Arlington is the most expensive county in the nation for child care, report finds

"Arlington County is the most expensive place in the United States for child care, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal.

It costs about $147,000 to foot the bill for five years of day care in Arlington — more than triple the country's median cost of $44,000, according to the WSJ. The report highlights an everyday economic struggle for many Arlington households, local leaders say.

A recent Chamber of Commerce survey of working parents and employers found that 80% of respondents cite 'high costs' as a major challenge.

'Child care costs are unsustainable for many working families, and the shortage of affordable options is holding parents back from fully participating in the workforce,' Chamber CEO Kate Bates said."
