A police officer suffered minor injuries after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in San Pedro Friday evening, officials said. More than a dozen police and fire officials responded to the 3500 block of South Gaffey Street after receiving a call about an officer down at the location around 8:20 p.m., according to LAPD. The driver of a black Chevrolet Camaro struck the officer and fled, police Officer Tony Im said. It’s unclear what led to the incident, but authorities said they took a report for an assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. The officer, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and remained in stable condition Saturday morning, according to LAPD. The Camaro was found near the scene and was impounded, officials said. Authorities continued to search for the driver Saturday morning.

A 25-year-old man was arrested Thursday after allegedly shooting at officers who were responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call in the Green Meadows neighborhood of South L.A. Los Angeles police officers responded to the area of 111th Street and Towne Avenue when they began chasing “possible suspects” in the 10900 block of South Avalon Boulevard. At least one person fired at the officers during the foot chase, police said. The officers did not return fire, nor were they struck by any bullets. Officers secured the area and eventually detained “several” people in connection to the original assault with a deadly weapon call. An AR-15 type rifle was found at the scene. One of those arrested, Quamontae Smith, was identified as the person who allegedly shot at the officers.

Two police officers in Tulsa, Oklahoma, were shot and wounded on the city's east side Monday morning and police were searching for a suspect who is described as armed and dangerous, authorities said. “I can confirm that we have two officers shot and are in critical condition,” Officer Jeanne Pierce said in an email to The Associated Press. The police department later posted on its Facebook and Twitter pages that the officers encountered a man identified as David Ware about 3:30 a.m. Monday and were shot by Ware following a scuffle with him. Ware fled the scene on foot, police said, warning that he could open fire on anyone he encounters.

A shocking reminder about the dangers of street racing was recently caught on a security camera in Los Angeles. The video, posted on the Los Angeles Police Department's Twitter page shows a violent crash that occurred on June 19 at San Vicente Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in the mid-Wilshire District. One driver was tossed out of the car and died. The other got away, but was later arrested. The LAPD says its a vivid reminder that "racing is not worth your life."

The Los Angeles Police Department Friday announced they arrested a 40-year-old woman in connection on suspicion of breaking into a home earlier this week while the owners were on vacation. In a video posted to social media of the arrest, police can be heard telling the woman, identified as Breanne Cates, to stop breaking into houses. Cates is accused of breaking into an Eagle Rock home while owners Jeff and Josefine Woodruff were on vacation. The couple’s security cameras caught a woman making herself at home Monday night, stealing their car and coming back to the home with a friend in a different car.

Adult film star Ron Jeremy pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of raping three women and sexually assaulting another in separate attacks dating back to 2014. The 67-year-old defendant — whose real name is Ronald Jeremy Hyatt — was ordered to remain jailed in lieu of $6.6 million bail, despite a defense request to lower the amount which had been set shortly before he was taken into custody Tuesday in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom. He was charged Monday with three counts each of forcible rape and forcible penetration by a foreign object and one count each of forcible oral copulation and sexual battery.

A gunman is at large after man was found shot and killed in East Los Angeles early Monday morning. The shooting occurred at about 2 a.m. at South Woods and Union Pacific avenues. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene to find a man dead from a gunshot wound. He was not immediately identified. It’s still unclear if there was also a car crash involved in the incident. There was no suspect information or a motive.

Detectives are investigating the shooting death of a 23-year-old man at a park in Long Beach, police said Saturday. The homicide is being investigated as a gang-related shooting and the victim was identified as Jose Rodriguez, the Long Beach Police Department reported. Rodriguez was in a park in the 1400 block of Chestnut Avenue at about 5 p.m. Wednesday when two suspects approached him and began shooting. The suspects fled the park eastbound toward Chestnut Avenue. Officers dispatched to the location located Rodriguez suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper and lower body. Paramedics responding to the scene rushed him to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Detectives were notified Friday that Rodriguez had died from his injuries at the area hospital.

Police Saturday continued their search for a man who pointed a gun at two women at the Westfield Culver City mall and then led officers on a chase that ended in a crash in Inglewood. “No new updates now,” Culver City Police Lt. Mike Van Hook told City News Service on Saturday. “This appears to be an isolated act.” The man approached the two women at about 4:25 p.m. Friday but they were not harmed, police said. Culver City police officers found the suspect’s vehicle near the mall and pursued him, but he crashed into multiple vehicles at the intersection of La Cienega Boulevard and Centinela Avenue in Inglewood, according to police.

Forty years after a sadistic suburban rapist terrorized California in what investigators later realized were a series of linked assaults and slayings, a 74-year-old former police officer is expected to plead guilty Monday to being the elusive Golden State Killer. The deal will spare Joseph James DeAngelo Jr. any chance of the death penalty for 13 murders and 13 kidnapping-related charges spanning six counties. In partial return, survivors of the assaults that spanned the 1970s and 1980s expect him to admit to up to 62 rapes that he could not be criminally charged with because too much time has passed. Yet nothing is certain until he actually speaks in a Sacramento State University ballroom pressed into use as a courtroom to provide for social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

County officials continued to report "significant increases" in coronavirus cases, hospitalizations, and the testing positivity rate on Saturday, announcing another 2,169 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 23 additional deaths. The new numbers bring the county's totals to 95,371 cases and 3,285 fatalities. According the Los Angeles Department of Public Health, the 7-day average of daily new cases is over 1,900, an increase from the 1,379 average two weeks ago. There are 1,698 people currently hospitalized, which is higher than the 1,350 to 1,450 daily hospitalizations seen in recent weeks. And, with test results now available for more than one million individuals, 9% are testing positive.

Authorities Friday issued a warning about bogus cards circulating online that claim they provide an exemption from state and local orders to wear a face mask. Los Angeles County health officials released images of what they say are fake “Face Mask Exempt” cards, one of which is laminated and states in bold print, “I AM EXEMPT FROM ANY ORDINANCE REQUIRING FACE MASK USAGE IN PUBLIC.” The cards warn that anyone harassing the card holder could be subject to Department of Justice penalties and fines of up to $150,000. “These flyers and cards are NOT from a government agency and are not endorsed by the Department of Justice or any Los Angeles County department,” according to the county Department of Public Health Twitter page.

Citing the rapid pace of coronavirus spread in some parts of California, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered seven counties including Los Angeles on Sunday to immediately close any bars and nightspots that are open and recommended eight other counties take action on their own to close those businesses. The order shuts down any bar, brewery or pub that sells alcoholic drinks without serving food at the same time. Those that sell food will either be subject to the stricter dine-in rules or asked to focus on takeout and patio service. The decision was announced in a statement issued by the governor’s state public health director, Dr. Sonia Angell. Bars in seven counties are immediately affected by the state order: Los Angeles, Fresno, Kern, San Joaquin, Tulare, Kings and Imperial.

The number of confirmed new coronavirus cases per day in the U.S. hit an all-time high of 40,000 Friday — eclipsing the mark set during one of the deadliest stretches in late April. The resurgence has led some governors to backtrack or at least pause the reopening of their states. While the increase is believed to reflect, in part, greatly expanded testing, experts say there is ample evidence the virus is making a comeback, including rising deaths and hospitalizations in parts of the country, especially in the South and West. Arizona, Texasand Florida are among the states that have been hit hard. The number of confirmed infections soared past the previous high set on April 24 of 36,400, according to the count kept by Johns Hopkins University.
