As climate change worsens, hotter and drier conditions make it easier for wildfires to start and turn into large, uncontrolled blazes.
I’ve watched a wildfire blaze five miles from my home in Montana. In moments like that, the difference between safety and tragedy comes down to seconds. Early detection makes the difference.
That’s why EDF recently helped launch a prototype of a satellite-based wildfire detection system called FireSat. Our goal is to provide better data for faster and more strategic responses to dangerous wildfires.
In addition to advanced firefighting technology, EDF works to cultivate healthy, thriving forests that are more resilient to wildfires, using tools like forest thinning and good fire where appropriate.
We’ve seen wildfire season growing longer, endangering people’s homes and livelihoods while threatening health as air quality reaches unhealthy levels. To protect lives, communities, and the places we love, we must build the capacity to prevent catastrophic wildfires.
Please donate today to help protect our forests and communities with three times the impact.
Here’s to healthy forests and safe homes,
