Friend,
Earlier this year, Donald Trump signed an executive order attempting to
strip nearly one million federal workers of their right to collectively
bargain. That means that more than 152,000 civilian federal employees in
California lost their union representation with the stroke of his pen.(1)
California is home to the highest number of federal employees outside the
DC metro area, so our state has felt a disproportionate impact of this
administration’s anti-worker policies. But, we now have an opportunity to
reverse Trump’s attack on union rights.
Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives have launched a
discharge petition to force a vote on the Protect America’s Workforce
Act.(2) The bill would overturn Trump’s executive order and restore
collective bargaining rights to federal workers. A discharge petition
would allow the bill to bypass committees and bring a bill directly to the
floor for a vote.

Trump’s attacks on the federal workforce have had a devastating impact.
From safeguarding our national parks to protecting our communities from
wildfires, California relies on a functioning federal infrastructure.(3)
Without the right to collective bargaining -- a hallmark of the federal
workforce for more than 60 years -- federal workers are at risk.
Eliminating union protections has allowed the Trump administration to
decimate the ranks of federal employees, putting those who still have a
job in limbo and casting a pall over the entire federal workforce.
Fortunately, federal unions have bipartisan support in Congress, with
seven Republican cosponsors already signed on to the Protect America’s
Workforce Act. By moving forward the discharge petition, Congress can
quickly bring this important bill to a vote and restore union protections
for federal workers.
