Friends, as many of you might know, my life was far from perfect when I first decided to run for Mayor of Phoenix. I had just given birth to my newborn son, my marriage had ended, and my mother was diagnosed with late-stage cancer all around the same time.
When our former mayor announced he would be stepping down and a special election was called, I was certain I was not ready to throw my hat into the ring to run the country’s fifth-largest city.
Fortunately, my friends felt differently. Many of them told me I shouldn’t let divorce or motherhood be the reason I didn’t run. I was lucky to have folks who wanted to help and who wanted to see me succeed.
Without their support, I wouldn’t have launched my campaign and been elected the Mayor of Phoenix in 2019.
I talk about this and more on Karen Finerman’s podcast ‘How She Does It’. You can listen to it here. [[link removed]]

I know the value of persevering and overcoming during challenging times. Some of the policies I’ve championed as mayor are born out of those personal experiences.
As a working mom, I know how much of a lifesaver nursing spaces can be. It’s why I expanded the availability of nursing spaces in the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.
During my mother’s cancer battle, her medical team in Phoenix said to get to the next level of care, we’d have to go to Houston. I know how heartbreaking that is for families to hear; it’s why I’ve worked to expand access to advanced cancer care here at home.
And I feel a deep sense of responsibility to leave this city better off for the next generation—something I know so many parents can relate to. So from bringing in well-paying advanced manufacturing jobs, many of which don’t require a bachelor's degree, to minimizing the impact of a warming climate by investing in long-term infrastructure, I want to ensure my son’s generation can continue to thrive here in Phoenix.
I’m committed to doing everything I can for Phoenix and the communities that call it home. If you want to stay involved and support me in this work, please donate to my organization, Keeping Arizonans Together and Engaged >> [[link removed]]
