Earlier this month, President Trump fired the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics hours after weaker than expected jobs data raised more concerns about his tariff policy.

This unprecedented move to fire a non-controversial head of a government agency for doing their job and providing crucial transparency just because the president didn’t like what the government’s data showed is another step toward authoritarianism. Our democracy depends on the people having access to information about what is going on in the country, whether or not the president feels good about it.

This firing is just the latest in Trump’s firing spree of public servants.

Since the start of his second term, Trump has sought to remake the federal government, and has done so by firing 50 high-level appointees who make sure our government runs, and runs ethically and effectively—including watchdogs, ethics officials and nonpolitical advisors.

These firings are an unprecedented attack on independent agencies and government accountability —and they’re a widescale attempt to weaken institutional guardrails.

Out of these 50 firings, 10 were of appointees that Trump himself installed.

Many of these firings by Trump have been illegal, and some go against Supreme Court precedent.

For example, Trump’s firing of the two Democratic members of the Federal Trade Commission undermines the Supreme Court's 1935 decision in Humphrey’s Executor v. U.S. that says presidents cannot remove members of the FTC on policy grounds.

The Trump administration hasn’t been shy in hiding its desire to overturn this decision. In a letter to Senator Dick Durbin, it stated that the Department of Justice “intends to urge the Supreme Court to overrule [the Humphrey’s Executor] decision, which prevents the President from adequately supervising principal officers in the Executive Branch.”

Overturning Humprey's Executor would end independent agencies as we know them, legitimize Trump’s illegal firing spree and give presidents the freedom to install their politically-aligned appointees to positions that are designed to be apolitical.
