Texas Republicans just crossed a line—and now Congress must act.
Hi Friend,
Texas Republicans just crossed a line—and now Congress must act.
In an outrageous display of authoritarian power, Texas state troopers forcibly detained Democratic Rep. Nicole Collier inside the Capitol to stop her from protesting a racist redistricting plan. She wasn’t under arrest. She wasn’t charged with a crime. She simply tried to leave—and they locked the doors.
Collier refused to sign off on a police escort agreement she called “demeaning.” Because of that refusal, she was effectively trapped in the chamber, unable to leave freely. She has since filed a habeas corpus petition arguing that the confinement was unlawful.
This is what political kidnapping looks like in America, and we have to stop it.
Let’s be clear: No lawmaker should be physically trapped by the state to stop them from standing with their constituents. This isn’t just anti-democratic—it may be criminal.
The U.S. House Judiciary and Oversight Committees must immediately investigate this abuse of power. Holding a sitting legislator against her will is a threat to democracy. If we don’t act now, this will become the new normal.
