September is such an important month for all of us at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

National Suicide Prevention Week takes place this year from Sunday, September 7, to Saturday, September 13. And at AFSP, we also observe all of September as National Suicide Prevention Month –– because suicide impacts so many of us, and there is work to be done in our fight to save lives and provide support for those affected by this leading cause of death.

Connection is truly our greatest strength in the fight against suicide. We know from research that feeling connected to family and community support is one of the most important protective factors in reducing the likelihood of suicide.

That’s why this September, we’re focusing on the theme of “Looking Out for Each Other,” and shedding light on powerful opportunities for connection available in AFSP’s community. Everything we do, from scientific research, to education and loss programs, to our public policy efforts, reflects the concept of how we can all look out for each other –– and all of these efforts are made possible by the funds raised through the Out of the Darkness Walks.

AFSP’s Out of the Darkness Community Walks season begins early September. By participating in an AFSP Community Walk and spreading the word to others, you’ll be part of a movement to send the message that suicide can no longer exist in the shadows, and that we can all play a part in looking out for each other.

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing stories and resources related to our Out of the Darkness Walks, as well as our powerful education and support programs, public policy efforts, and research –– all through the theme of how we can best support each other as neighbors, friends, family, colleagues, and others in our community.

We encourage you to find a local Community Walk in your area and register today!
