As I write this note, I am struck by the weight of the IPC's famine declaration in Gaza. It is devastating news - but for our staff on the ground, it only confirms what they have been witnessing for months: a sharp and unrelenting rise in children arriving at our clinics with severe malnutrition.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC, is the world's gravest warning: Mass starvation is imminent, and without immediate aid, thousands more people will die. Children are already starving to death. Mothers are giving birth with little chance their babies will survive. Even our own staff are going hungry as they continue caring for the sick and injured.

FIRST, our clinics saw a heartbreaking surge in malnutrition - with some clinics reporting that 42% of pregnant and breastfeeding women are severely malnourished, and the number of children we see with Severe Acute Malnutrition - the most severe undernutrition associated with a high risk of mortality - is increasing every day.

THEN, we raised our voices. Project HOPE joined more than 100 organizations urging governments to open land crossings, restore the flow of food, medicine, and water, and end the siege. But despite these urgent calls, barriers to aid remain - and families are still going without the essentials they need to survive.
