Ten years ago today, Joanna McClinton was sworn in to represent the 191st District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
A girl from Southwest Philly, a public defender, driven by faith and public service, stepped into public office for the first time. She brought with her the hopes of her neighbors and a fierce determination to be their voice in Harrisburg.
Since that moment, she has made history time and time again.
* The first woman and first African-American to be elected as House Democratic Caucus Chair.
* The first woman to be elected as floor Leader in the Pennsylvania House.
* The first woman elected Speaker of the Pennsylvania House.
* The first Black woman to ever hold that gavel.
Speaker McClinton is a history-making leader who fights every day to deliver justice, dignity, and opportunity to all Pennsylvanians. This decade of service has only deepened her commitment to building a Commonwealth that works for everyone. But the work is far from over.
