On August, 25, 1921, the Battle of Blair Mountain began in West Virginia following the killing and jailing of unionized miners and their supporters. It was the largest armed rebellion in the U.S. since the Civil War. For many days, 10,000 striking coal miners, dubbed "rednecks" due to the red bandanas they wore around their necks, clashed with the police and armed strikebreakers before surrendering to federal troops. |
