When I was first elected to Congress, I promised you I’d be an independent voice for Maine’s 2nd District in Washington. Over the past two years, I’ve done my best to keep that promise.

This year, our country has been put to the test in more ways than I can count. Only independent leadership will see us through -- not blind loyalty to political parties or wealthy donors. So, in all the challenges that lie ahead, I’m committed to maintaining that bold, thoughtful leadership that Mainers are known for and expect from their elected officials.

I’ll be honest, though -- my commitment alone isn’t enough. I’m going to need this team of grassroots supporters to help power me through to victory in November, or else our dark money funded opponents are going to be successful in their efforts to buy this district’s representative.

Political independence is crucial to a functioning democracy. Our founding fathers knew that -- that’s why George Washington went to great lengths to warn against the corrosive influence of party politics when he left office all those years ago.

I firmly believe that every challenge we face going forward can be met head-on and resolved with bold leadership -- but only if people on both sides of the aisle are willing to talk to each other and come to a solution that works for the American people.

But our opponents are trying to replace that independent spirit with divisive partisanship.
